Behavioral & STAR · Your Story Bank · Lesson 1 of 2
The 6-8 stories to prepare
You can't script an answer per question — there are hundreds. Instead, prepare a small story bank: 6-8 rich, real experiences, each already in STAR shape with a quantified result. Then you select and reframe on the fly.
- Ambiguity: a problem with no clear owner or spec that you scoped and drove.
- Conflict / difficult stakeholder: a tense disagreement with a peer, manager, or customer you navigated.
- Failure & lesson: something you genuinely got wrong — and what you changed after.
- Leadership / impact: you moved a group or a metric, with or without formal authority.
- Fast learning: you ramped on something unfamiliar under time pressure.
- Hard tradeoff: you chose under real constraints (scope vs deadline, quality vs speed) and owned the call.
- Disagreement with a decision: you pushed back, then committed (or changed the outcome).
- Ownership beyond your lane: you fixed something that wasn't 'your job.'
Make them recent and realPick stories from the last 2-3 years where you were central. Real beats impressive — a modest story you can go three layers deep on beats a flashy one that collapses under 'why?' and 'what exactly did you do?'.
◆ Lock it in
- Prepare a bank of 6-8 real STAR stories, each with a number.
- Cover: ambiguity, conflict, failure, leadership, fast learning, tradeoff, disagreement, ownership.
- Choose recent, central, real stories that survive follow-up probing.
Feynman drill — say it out loudList the 6-8 story categories from memory and name a real experience of yours for three of them.
