The interview loop & round types
A PM loop is a set of question categories, each scored on a specific competency. Knowing which round you are in tells you which framework to run and what the interviewer is grading.
- Product sense / design: 'Design a product for X' or 'improve Y'. Grades user empathy, structured thinking, and creativity.
- Analytical / metrics: 'What metric would you track?', 'usage dropped 15% — why?'. Grades data fluency and rigor.
- Estimation: 'How many X in the US?'. Grades structured reasoning under uncertainty.
- Strategy: 'Should company Z enter market W?'. Grades business judgment and market thinking.
- Execution: 'Prioritize this roadmap', 'a launch is slipping'. Grades prioritization and delivery.
- Behavioral: 'Tell me about a time…'. Grades leadership, collaboration, conflict, and influence.
- AI-era variant: senior loops increasingly add an AI round — live prototyping with AI tools or an eval deep-dive (see the AI PM module).
Name the round to yourselfBefore answering, silently classify the question. 'Design a better X' → product sense (start from users). 'Why did metric drop' → analytical (segment + hypothesize). Matching the framework to the round is half the score.
Across every round, interviewers reward the same meta-skills: structure (a visible framework), communication (think out loud, signpost), prioritization (say what matters most and why), and user/business judgment.
